Take the NEW Handmade Pledge

Share the love

The Handmade Pledge is a pledge to purchase handmade items for you, your loved ones, and to ask others to do the same when buying for you this holiday shopping season. This collaborative and quick pledge is designed to help spread the word and the love for handmade.

The Handmade Pledge is a commitment to buy handmade this holiday season and to request others to do the same. This pledge actually started years ago and was used by the Handmade Consortium but somewhere along the line they didn’t follow through and continue with the handmade commitment. But, we have and will continue to do so and here is why.

Handmade comes with a story. It wasn’t made in some anonymous factory like all the others. Choosing handmade shows that you are gifting something with meaning. You or whoever made your things actually thought about you as a person and someone’s hands actually took the time and energy to personally create something special just for you.
Handmade offers the beauty of imperfection and allows you to express your own unique style. Everyone dresses, furnishes and decorates from all the same places and there is no uniqueness anymore. Not to mention how much better for the environment handmade is. Mass production is a major cause of global warming.

Of course, there is also the added benefits of shopping local when you go with handmade and it allows you to keep your money in your own community and help your local economy. Whether you choose to purchase your handmade locally or not it is a strong reminder of where we came from. A connection to the past and how our ancestors actually lived and thrived.

Holiday shopping at big name chain stores does very, very little for the employees that work so hard at them. Most of the benefits that those companies receive goes right in the pockets of upper management and the owners themselves. There is little appreciation or added perks that comes into their lives from all the time that is invested into these companies. This is so far from the case when it comes to shopping handmade. However small that amount that you spend shopping this holiday season, although it won’t make much of a difference to that big chain store, it can make a handmade shops dreams come true. It can make ballet lessons possible that otherwise would not happen. It could put food on the table and presents under the tree for children that would have so much less. It might pay an electric bill and keep someone warm. It can make a difference.
